It was an important Peruvian defensive stronghold during the Battle of Miraflores on January 15, 1881. This was the site where both soldiers and civilians gave their lives in defense of the nation, which is why it is considered a historic monument—a key bastion in the protection of the city.
Built starting in the 1940s, the site includes, among other features, a defensive bulwark covered with cobblestones, a statue of the Child Hero Manuel Bonilla, a Dahlgren cannon dating back to 1862, and a copper statue of Andrés Avelino Cáceres.
It also houses the Andrés Avelino Cáceres Site Museum, an exhibition hall, and the “Augusta Palma” children’s reading room.
